Take morning flight to Xining – the capital city of Qinghai province. Positioned at the edge of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau with an altitude of 2275 meters, it serves as a stopover for the trip to Tibet. After lunch, we’ll tour the Taer Monastery – one of the six great monasteries of the Yellow Hat Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. This evening, enjoy a welcome dinner.
Day 6 Xining – Express Train to Tibet (B, L, D)
In the morning, we’ll visit the Provincial Museum and tour the Residence of General Ma Bufang - a warlord in the 1940’s, the Great Mosque, with over 600 years of history. This evening, we’ll board the express train for Lhasa and start our adventure in Tibet.
Day 7 Arrival Lhasa (B, L, D)
The Tibet Railway runs 1,956 kilometers from Xining to Lhasa and is the world's longest railroad built atop a plateau. Construction started on June 29th, 2001 and opened to traffic on July 1st, 2006. The Golmud-Lhasa section extends 1,142 kilometers, with the highest elevation being some 5,072 meters above sea level at Tanggula Range, making it the highest railway in the world. This morning, if the weather permits, you’ll enjoy a marvelous view of the rising sun. Throughout the rest of the day, you will see:
* Kunlun Mountain – renowned as the ancestor of many mountains in the area.
* Kekexili – “paradise for wild animals”.
* Couna Lake – the highest fresh water lake in the world and a holy lake for Tibetans.
* Damshung – “Gate of Northern Tibet”, etc.
* Arrival at Lhasa in the evening, transfer and check in hotel.
Day 8 Lhasa (B, L, D)
Today’s highlight is the magnificent Potala Palace, once the seat of Tibetan government and winter palace of the Dalai Lama. After lunch, visit Norbulingka – the summer palace of the Dalai Lama. Dinner at Crazy Yak Restaurant with Tibetan cultural performance.
Day 9 Lhasa (B, L, D)
This morning we’ll tour the golden-roofed Jokhang Monastery - Tibet’s holiest shrine. It commemorates the marriage of Tang princess Wencheng to King Songtsen Gampo 1,300 years ago, and houses a pure gold statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni brought to Tibet by the princess. Then we’ll walk around the pilgrim circuit - Barkhor Street. In the afternoon, we visit Sera Monastery - one of the three largest monasteries of Gelugpa.
Day 10 Lhasa / Chengdu by Air (B, L, D)
Take morning flight to Chengdu. Built in 316 BC during the Warring States Period, Chengdu boasts a 2,300-year history, which is linked closely with arts and crafts trades. Upon arrival, transfer to hotel for check-in. Afternoon tour of the still-functioning Dujiangyan Ancient Irrigation Project – a UNESCO world heritage site.
Day 11 Chengdu (B, L, D)
Today’s highlight is the visit to the Giant Panda Breeding Center where you’ll see this lovely creature up close and learn its habitat and evolution. Then we tour the mysterious Sanxingdui Museum – another UNESCO world heritage site.
